Nature of Business:
Crisis Management: assisting a corporate account, Boise Cascade, in Jackson, Alabama, where the operations had adamently decided not to buy from a Japanese company. Thus, Mitsubishi International was not chosen as the start-up supplier.
Challenges:
- Overcoming local business, social cultures and biases.
- Logistics of our chemical supply.
- Sourcing Mitsubishi globally for sudden crisis staffing.
- Optimizing competitor's chemistry to produce saleable pulp in the start up operation until Mitsubishi's specialty chemical arrived (Liptol).
- Maintaining positive ties with operations and research personal in a tense environment as Mitsubishi International had been chosen as the lead supplier in the up-coming start-up of Kenora, ON, Boise Cascade's sister pulp mill.
Resolution:
- Absorbed the cost of customer service to ensure position in other Boise Cascade accounts.
- Negotiated position with operations and research due to our superior technical capabilities.
- Sourced the appropriate Mitsubishi chemisty in North America and arranged delivery.
- Tapped other divisions of Mitsubishi International in North America (eg. textiles & commodity chemical management) to amass the assistance required to run a start-up. The regular start-up support team of technicians could not arrive from Japan quick enough. Trained new staff onsite.
- Troubleshooting of the competitor’s chemistry understanding that it was not possible in that process to produce the competitor’s promised result.
