Nature of Business:

International business development, technical and customer service for specialty chemicals (one example shown below).

Challenges:

• Position Mitsubishi International Specialty Chemical supplier to the recycle pulp industry in North America.
• Create confidence via risk management and change management:
  • Work as lead supplier in supplier round table design discussions, without revealing application and chemical proprietary knowledge to other suppliers who had offered competitive chemistry.
  • Overcome cultural or business negative biases due to Mitsubishi International being an offshore company.
  • Ensure on time and capacity production start-up goals are smoothly met while delivering required specifications for better quality product from the pulp mill. 

Resolution:

• Developed and implemented international business strategy to provide the corporate client (e.g. Boise Cascade) confidence in Mitsubishi International.
• Worked closely with Boise Cascade operations, management and research personnel to ensure meeting expectations through on time delivery, local back-up inventory, North American laboratory facilities, onsite technical service team during start-up, surfactant with start-up specialists during the round table design period and start-up.
• Through leadership, partnership and team approach coupled with expertise in operations, chemical, mechanical start-ups and organization, the result was the smoothest start-up most participants had ever witnessed.
• Proudly started on time, providing above-design capacity and meeting or exceeding quality standard requirements within operational cost projections.
